Busy season is a books problem wearing a tax costume

I watch seniors spend February recategorizing January while returns sit.

The tax work is not the only bottleneck. The books were never current, so every return starts with a scavenger hunt. IRS filing dates do not care that your bookkeeper quit in November.

If the historical years are unfiled, that is reconstruction now, not in March. Unfiled years for tax professionals and book reconstruction for tax deadlines are the catch-up path. Monthly capacity is a different seat.

What I would change before next January

  • Close the current book every month, not in a Q1 pile
  • Take production off partner calendars. Leave review.
  • Scope catch-up files in the fall, not the week of the extension

The CPA staffing crisis in 2026 is why "we will hire before tax season" keeps failing. AICPA hiring-outlook data still shows demand. The pipeline does not clear Q1 for you.

White-label monthly delivery is how firms keep books moving while tax staff stay on returns. For CPA Firms is the overview. How it works is the transfer. Practice it on a free test client in the off-season, not on April 10.

What not to do

Do not staff a seasonal bookkeeping bench you will dump in May. Do not put unfiled years into the monthly queue and hope. Catch-up vs monthly is the rule.

Journal of Accountancy coverage of the graduate pipeline is the longer backdrop. You cannot recruit your way through the next four months if the people do not exist.

Look at sample deliverables so partners know what "review-ready" means before busy season hits.

Build the capacity while you still have a calendar

Start a free test client this month. Or schedule a conversation about which clients should move before January.
